SR&ED Tax Credit in Ontario

Province-specific stacking, application route, and recovery range for Ontario businesses applying to SR&ED.

Average recovery in Ontario

$28K–$160K combined federal + Ontario first-year recovery for an eligible Ontario CCPC. Ontario tech, biotech, and manufacturing companies are particularly common SR&ED filers.

Provincial stacking

Ontario stacks two provincial credits on top of the federal 35%: the Ontario R&D Tax Credit (ORDTC, 8% refundable) and the Ontario Innovation Tax Credit (OITC, 3.5% non-refundable, treated as 3.5% effective for CCPCs). Combined Ontario stacking adds approximately 11.5% on qualifying salaries, creating an effective rate of ~46% for Ontario CCPCs.

How to apply in Ontario

Ontario credits are claimed on the federal T2 return — no separate provincial filing is required. The federal CRA review process applies to both federal and Ontario components. Ontario is generally efficient; first-time filers see refunds in 6–9 months.

Bottom line for Ontario

Ontario stacks meaningfully on federal SR&ED but less than Quebec. Most Ontario-based engineering teams of 8+ should be filing. The Ontario Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit (OIDMTC) is a separate program worth investigating for media and gaming companies.
