SR&ED Tax Credit in Alberta
Province-specific stacking, application route, and recovery range for Alberta businesses applying to SR&ED.
Average recovery in Alberta
$22K–$140K combined federal + Alberta first-year recovery. Lower end for early-stage companies (limited use of non-refundable credit); higher end for established profitable Alberta CCPCs.
Provincial stacking
Alberta's Innovation Employment Grant (IEG) replaced the previous provincial SR&ED credit. The IEG provides an 8% non-refundable credit on qualifying R&D wages (rising to 20% for incremental R&D over a base period). Combined effective rate ~38–46% for Alberta CCPCs depending on incremental qualification.
How to apply in Alberta
IEG is claimed via federal T2 with Alberta-specific schedules. The non-refundable nature means it reduces tax payable rather than producing a cash refund — useful for profitable Alberta CCPCs but less impactful for early-stage loss-making companies.
Bottom line for Alberta
Alberta IEG is less generous than Quebec or BC's refundable structures, but the incremental component (20% for spending above base) is unique and rewards growing R&D programs. Early-stage loss-making companies should focus on the federal 35% refundable component.
